description

“L'Illustration" was France’s first illustrated news magazine, founded in 1843 by Édouard Charton. A world pioneer from 1906, it plays a key role in the documentation of French history, and continues to inspire press professionals. In 1913, the magazine “L’Illustration” published a three-page article featuring mannequins on parade at Jacques Doucet's couture house. This leading Parisian couturier has been known since the late 19th and early 20th centuries for having founded one of the first haute couture houses in Paris, located on rue de la Paix, in the heart of the fashion district. Jacques Doucet was also a passionate art lover and collector, having built up an extensive collection of 18th-century works that directly influenced his fashion creations. The excerpt entitled “Figures parisiennes: le mannequin”, published on December 27, 1913, presents these mannequins as a typically Parisian figure. The article describes one of them as the “Venus of the faubourgs”, as she stands out from the others “like a long-stemmed rose amidst a bouquet of modest violets”, according to the words of the extract.
